Gospel

“THERE IS A GOD SHAPED VACUUM IN THE HEART OF EVERY MAN WHICH CANNOT BE FILLED BY ANY CREATED THING, BUT ONLY BY GOD, THE CREATOR, MADE KNOWN THROUGH JESUS.”

-BLAISE PASCAL

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the best news anyone could ever receive.  It is God’s message to the world that Jesus came to live, die, and rise again for the forgiveness of sin and the renewal of all things. It is the glorious truth that God desires broken sinners to return to Him through His Son and His work on the cross. It is the only source of true and eternal life. Every aspect of life should find it’s center in this good news. It is the most powerful agent of change in the universe. The Gospel changes everything, and it is for everyone… even you.

Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you – unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.  -1 Corinthians 15:1-4

THE BREAKDOWN

1. The one and only God who is holy made us in His image to know Him.

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” -Genesis 1:26-28

2. We sinned and cut ourselves off from Him.

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. -Genesis 3:1-7

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. -Romans 3:23

3. In His great love, God became a man in Jesus, lived a perfect life, and died on the cross, thus fulfilling the law Himself and taking on Himself the punishment for the sins of the world.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. -John 1:14

For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. -Hebrews 7:6

But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. -Romans 3:21-26

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. -Romans 5:12-21

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. -John 3:16

He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. -1 John 2:2

4. Jesus rose again from the dead, showing that God accepted Christ’s sacrifice and that God’s wrath against sin had been satisfied.

God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. -Acts 2:24

…who (Jesus) was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification. -Romans 4:25

5. God now calls people everywhere to repent of their sins and trust in Christ alone for forgiveness.

The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. -Acts 17:30

But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. -John 1:12

6. If we repent of our sins and trust in Christ, we are born again into a new life, an eternal life with God.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. -John 3:16

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. -Romans 6:23
